USYD is calling you again!

This year the USYD badminton team will be participating in 2 events:
1) East Coast Challenge, July 1-4 at UNSW, (to be confirmed)
2) Australian University Games, September 23-28 at Gold Coast

There will be a limited number of boys and girls to be selected to the USYD Badminton team. The trial for the uni team will be held on SUNDAY May 27 at 12.30pm and TUESDAY May 29 at 8.00pm, both in HK Ward Gym. Anyone who is a Sydney University student AND member of SU sport, is eligible to join the trial (must turn up to one of the two dates as mentioned above).

There are some important points & responsibilities to consider before attending the trials. If you are selected as a Uni team member:
1) You must attend USYD badminton sessions as much as possible, either a Tuesday or Sunday session.
2) You must pay for the Gold Coast trip (roughly between $600-$800 per person, which is to be confirmed).
3) You must help out in fund-raising activities (such as organising tournaments, selling donuts etc) to help lower the cost of your trip to the Gold Coast.

If you are interested in joining the USYD badminton team this year, just pop-into one of the trial days.

For any further details, please contact Brianada KOENTJORO or Adrian MANSUKHANI on the USYDBC Committee.

TRAINING TIP #4

HYDRATION FOR A HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETE

Loss of body weight from fluid (as little as 2%) can significantly decrease performance (eg. 1.2kg for an 60kg athlete). Dehydration affects muscular endurance, skill, concentration, also slowing the rate of stomach emptying. As dehydration increases, so does heart rate, body temperature and your perceived rate of exhaustion. Fluid losses of greater than 3-4% of body weight increases the risk of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and gastrointestinal problems. Greater levels increase risk of heat stress which in severe cases can cause permanent physical damage & even death. Fluid requirements for exercise vary depending on individual, temperature, humidity, intensity and rate of sweating. Sweating rates also differ for individuals.

General guidelines include:
• Drink before you get thirsty
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine
• Drink approximately 1-2 cups before exercise
• Drinking regularly is more beneficial than sculling
• Palatable drinks encourage greater consumption
• Practice drinking in training
• Salt enhances re-hydration
• Consume as much fluid as possible post exercise (150% more than fluid loss)

Daily Routine:
• Upon waking start to drink 2 x 600ml bottles of Gatorade over 90mins
• You should have a drink bottle with Gatorade/water and be constantly drinking all day wherever you are
• If you wake up dehydrated it is hard to gain full hydration that day (you can see how this would have a flow on effect during competition/training in a hot environment). So 4½ hours before bedtime consume one Gatorade 600ml in 45 mins (don't scull - drink it over the whole 45mins) Then drink another Gatorade 600ml in the next 45 mins. This should allow you 3hrs to empty out any excess fluid before bedtime, so you won’t be up going to the bathroom all night!
• During training/competition drink regularly whenever possible
• If possible weigh yourself before & after exercise, for every kg lost - drink 1.5 litres of fluid. If it isn’t possible to weigh yourself just make sure you consume plenty of fluid post training/competition.
